Soccer

Soccer is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each, primarily known as football outside of North America. The objective of the game is to score goals by getting a spherical ball into the opposing team’s net, using any part of the body except the arms and hands (goalkeepers are allowed to use their hands within their penalty area). The game is played on a rectangular field, known as a pitch, with a goal at each end.

Soccer is governed by a set of rules known as the Laws of the Game, maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The sport is one of the most popular globally, with millions of fans and players, and is governed internationally by FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association).

Matches typically consist of two halves, each lasting 45 minutes, with a half-time interval. The team with the highest number of goals at the end of the match wins. If the match is tied, various formats such as extra time or penalty shootouts may be used to determine a winner, especially in knockout competitions. Soccer emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and skill, and its simplicity and accessibility have contributed to its widespread appeal.
