GLP-1RAs

GLP-1RAs, or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, are a class of medications that mimic the effects of the naturally occurring hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). These drugs are primarily used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, as they help to lower blood glucose levels. GLP-1RAs stimulate insulin secretion in response to meals, suppress glucagon release, slow gastric emptying, and promote a feeling of fullness (satiety), thereby aiding in weight management as well. By activating the GLP-1 receptors in various tissues, these medications contribute to improved glycemic control and can also have cardiovascular benefits. Examples of GLP-1RAs include liraglutide, semaglutide, and dulaglutide. Their role in treatment protocols reflects a growing understanding of the interplay between hormones and glucose metabolism in diabetes management.
